IntroductionRugged Access Point and Access Client with Dual Radio
FeaturesReliable, robust and safe Wireless LAN: Based on cutting edge technologies, the industrial Rugged Access Point (RAP) is the network interface for applications in the areas of picking, mobile computing and data communication. The RAP supports all standards such as 802.11 b/g/a at transmission frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz.
It provides a wide array of connection options with the installed 4-port switch, fiber optic and RJ45 Ethernet jack. Diversity antennae ensure a stable wireless connection in critical environments. The range of the RAP is between 10 m and 1 km depending on the antennae. Mounting adapters ensure simple and secure mounting. A guide slot is used to hang the RAP onto the adapter and then it is fastened permanently in a second step.Even though it is in protection class IP65, the access point can be connected using a standard cable. A screw-on lid covers the interfaces. A choice of 24 V DC or 110 / 230 V AC power supplies is available. The RAP can also be supplied via PoE ('Power over Ethernet') thus reducing the effort and expense required for installation. The user can choose suitable antennae depending on the infrastructure used and the transmission distance to be covered. This is possible thanks to external antenna connections. An integrated configuration memory allows for restoring all settings if a device is exchanged.
IP routing is used for targeted control of data traffic and keeps both broadcasts and undesired data out of the WLAN using protocol filters. This optimizes data traffic and only the data intended for the client is actually transferred. The access point supports forced roaming for mobile applications.
Data can be filtered at protocol level especially when it comes to recording machine and operating data as well as inter-process communication. The routing function allows for a direct filtered communication route to the database. The monitoring function is used to additionally monitor this connection.
In combination with our VMT vehicle terminal, the RAP is the optimal tool for ensuring a secure wireless transmission path. In addition to this, the terminal supports practical functions such as automatic power-on upon connection to the network as well as update and service functions based on the LANCHECK software tool.
Security is a crucial factor in wireless networks. The latest standards were at the core of our development work in developing the RAP. HTTPS web interface and various different access restrictions comply with current security requirements. ICMP packets automatically monitor the Rugged Access Clients (RAC). WEP128 (13 character text key) and WPA Radius encryption guarantee the required data security within the wireless network. In the case of WPA/Radius, access control can take place centrally from a server.
Operation of the web interface is distinguished by the simplicity and clarity of its configuration. The multilingual web interface can be accessed by entering its web address in the browser. Security is guaranteed here as well using a login and password query. The configurations can also be stored in a file on the server. All RAPs can be managed remotely independent of their location. The PING function has also been integrated in the configuration tool for simple commissioning. In addition to the usual security standards, ads-tec has installed intelligent filters in the RAP, which ensure that only the intended data types are transferred via the network. Data can be filtered according to user-defined criteria by IP address, MAC address or TCP/UDP ports used by their network protocol. The filters restrict access to the device and allow for controlling the data traffic in the network. This ensures that only information relevant to the actual application is transferred via the wireless network. Targeted data control optimizes usage of the transfer bandwidth and individual adaptation to application-specific conditions.
