IntroductionThe Madison Technologies’ Network Termination Device (NTD) should be used whenever a home networking device (structured cabling or smart wiring) is installed. This will ensure the solution complies with the current standards.
The new NTD (MT2710) contains a built in DSL filter option, removing the need for additional filters inside the consumers home. Additionally it has inbuilt lightning surge protection for the protection of the end-user (connection of a suitable bonding conductor is required to make it effective). Installing the new NTD is the first step in improving home cabling flexibility.
Features Why use an NTD? An NTD is a valid network boundary point and provides a high level of cabling and service flexibility for homes and some small businesses. The NTD should be used in the following circumstances:
- at the specific request of the builder or customer
- where two or more telecommunications outlets (TOs) have been star-wired from the building entry point by the builder, owner or customer
- where an external (outdoor) DSL (ADSL or VDSL) central filter is required
- where customer lightning protection (CLP) is required or a rural lead-in cable is to be connected
- where home networking (“structured cabling” or “smart wiring”) has been, or will be, installed
- where equipment has been, or will be, installed that switches, controls or conditions the access line before it terminates on any TO (e.g. a C/O switch, keyphone system, small PABX, hard-wired security alarm panel or other hard-wired customer equipment).
Note: Must be installed in accordance with Telstra requirements
Where an NTD is installed, it is the network boundary point for all lines connected to it. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.

An NTD is required when using a home networking device as shown in figure 1.

4-pair category 5 or category 6 cable should be used for the internal cabling to maximise flexibility and performance for current and future telecommunications services.
