Easily Build an Environmental Monitoring System for Data Centre and Remote Facilities
Environmental monitoring and control is crucial in ensuring the smooth day-to-day running and overall reliability of any data centre or IT facility.
Many devices commonly used in Industrial Automation (IA) systems have the capability to be implemented in server room monitoring applications, to provide increases in overall system reliability and availability. However, these devices generally utilise specific automation based communications protocols, or incorporate technologies which are difficult to integrate easily into an IT-centric environment.
Despite these obstacles, IT departments are starting to realise the potential of deploying IA devices to monitor and control critical data centre infrastructure such as UPS and battery equipment, temperature and humidity sensors, power consumption meters, data switches, or even live video.

In traditional IA applications, automation devices typically communicate with an overall Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, via automation-based protocols such as Modbus. In the IT world however, managed devices make use of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) to communicate information back to an NMS (Network Management System), providing valuable  diagnostic information on the health of the network.
Whilst on the face of it, these systems appear to be wholly incompatible; Moxa's ioLogik series provides an intelligent, IT-centric solution to the problem of integrating IA devices into a managed network environment over SNMP. Now environmental information from IA devices can be simply and easily incorporated into a conventional network management system, utilising traditional managed network devices, such as switches, routers, and I/O servers.

Active Ethernet I/O
Active Ethernet I/O is a new concept introduced by Moxa that offers proactive, condition-based reporting and the control of I/O devices used for PC-based data acquisition and control. The I/O status of an Active Ethernet I/O device can be reported and controlled automatically on-site based on user specified conditions. This report-by-exception approach, which is new to PC-based monitoring, requires far less bandwidth than traditional polling methods.
